SPD offers you an amazing opportunity (again!)--this time, to spend a day with The New York Times Graphics Director, Steve Duenes, in the second of our Master Class series, ART + INFO. Steve manages a group of 30 NYT journalists who research, design, and program the award-winning diagrams, maps, and visualizations for both the Times' website and newspaper. The team's many awards include not only honors from SPD, but also AIGA, SND (The Society of News Design), and the Society of Professional Journalists. In 2009, the New York Times received the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award for Communication.
Spend SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26th with Steve as he takes the class through
examples of the best current visualization forms out there today, and
learn the ins and outs of data manipulation--what's good, and WHY.
Listen to a true graphics Master critique various print magazine and
interactive pieces, and come away with a better understanding of the
transition from print to digital.
The interwebs are here to
stay, so it's time to get on board. Reserve your seat for ART + INFO now; the class is limited to 10 lucky students.
**A note about workshop materials: you will need to bring your own
laptop to the workshop in order to complete the workshop assignments
that day.
Read more about Steve Duenes in a Q&A here and in this profile of his team of "renegade cybergeeks" from New York Magazine.
ABOUT THE ART + INFO CLASS
:
Saturday, Ferbruary 26th, 2011
This class is open to current SPD Professional Members only. You can join or renew your membership along with registration if you need to. The day-long class begins at 8:30AM and runs through 3:00PM. Breakfast and lunch are included; reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis only.
ABOUT THE SPD MASTER CLASS SERIES:
Our goal: an exclusive workshop providing inspiration, education, hands-on skills
to SPD members through intimate access to well-respected, award-ridden,
top-dog design professionals. After this 1-day intensive workshop,
you'll have a new mentor, a deeper professional network, and a broader
skill-set to take to work on Monday morning.
Our plan: mentors will lead each 1-day workshop offering critical
analysis of one of their areas of expertise, using samples of their own
work as "case study" examples to provide insight into the editorial
process and to highlight the key factors that shape their body of work.
Each workshop will include conversations about and experiences with the
brainstorming process, how to collaborate with editors, keys to
proactive leadership, dealing with deadlines, working within and around
your budget, great research techniques, and more. The seminar day is
centered around in-class exercises, offering participants the
opportunity to learn from an intimate community of colleagues and under
the supervision and influence of a great mentor.
The day begins with breakfast approximately 8:30am, includes a catered lunch, and will end approximately 3:00pm.

The Society of Publication Designers (SPD)
SPD is a membership organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging excellence in editorial design across all print and digital platforms. Our members are art directors, designers, photo editors, photographers, illustrators and information graphics professionals, editors and students.
Since drafting its charter in 1965, SPD remains the only organization specifically addressing the visual concerns of print and digital editorial professionals, whether that be journalism, storytelling, service or more. Editorial design plays a crucial role in shaping and documenting our common history; as such, the efforts of the Society serve to educate and enlighten our members, and the general public about the importance of magazines, newspapers, and other publications.
